Task lamp or screen light? Solve the placement problem first

Compare a clamp-mounted work lamp with monitor-mounted lighting and check the exact fit.

Name the task that needs light

Reading papers, seeing the keyboard and appearing on a video call are different lighting tasks. Start by identifying where light is missing and where a bright reflection is already distracting. With your usual screen content open, change one light or window covering at a time. This simple comparison helps determine whether the problem belongs to the room arrangement, the screen settings or a task light. A more elaborate lamp does not automatically solve the wrong placement.

A work lamp moves around the task

IKEA TERTIAL item 203.554.34 is a dark-gray clamp-mounted work lamp with an adjustable arm and head. The retained manufacturer facts identify a desk clamp up to 2.25 inches, a separately purchased E26 bulb and a 13W maximum bulb power. These are exact-model requirements. Measure the mounting area and check that the clamp can seat beneath the top. Include the appropriate bulb on the shopping list; a lamp without its separately sold bulb should not be treated as a complete ready-to-use package.

A screen light uses a different mounting location

BenQ ScreenBar families sit at the monitor, making the exact screen shape and mounting method important. The Halo 2 record identifies front and rear lighting, which is a different feature choice from assuming every ScreenBar has the same lighting arrangement. Check the current manufacturer information for the exact ScreenBar model and monitor compatibility. Consider how it will share the area with a webcam, and whether the selected screen allows the required attachment.

Test the intended arrangement

Place a proposed light so it illuminates the working material rather than creating a bright reflection on the screen. Try the room with the screen and paper task in their actual positions. Follow the product's electrical, bulb and installation instructions. A lamp that can adjust its head still needs an appropriate mounting surface and a clear cord route. Keep cables out of chair travel and moving-desk components.

Choose the placement, then the product

Shortlist TERTIAL when an adjustable clamp-mounted work light fits the task and its bulb requirements are acceptable. Investigate an exact ScreenBar when monitor mounting solves a surface-space problem and the screen compatibility is documented. We do not publish invented brightness, flicker or eye-health results. Office Home Supply has not tested these lamps or certified a monitor-and-light combination. Compare current merchant prices after defining the complete installation and included parts.
