Choose lighting around the task and the room.

Plan lamp placement, reflections, mounting, and bulb choices before choosing a desk light.

Start with the actual task: reading paper, writing, typing, or lighting the room behind a screen. A lamp beside the desk and a monitor-mounted bar occupy different places. Our planning suggestion is to mark where papers and the keyboard normally sit, then check whether the proposed light can reach that area without competing with a webcam or monitor arm.

OSHA recommends arranging the workstation to limit glare from windows, overhead fixtures, and desk lamps. Its guidance separates supplemental lighting for paper tasks from brightness directed at the display. Check reflections with the screen in its normal position, and consider blinds or indirect, shielded light where bright sources interfere. We do not infer a health outcome from any particular lamp.

Compare the installation method as carefully as the appearance. A desk clamp needs an accessible edge and a compatible thickness; a monitor light needs the manufacturer's exact screen-fit guidance. For a bulb-based lamp, confirm the required bulb format and maximum power, and include any separately sold bulb in your shopping list. Follow the product's own instructions rather than assuming every lamp accepts the same bulb.

Before buying, sketch the mounting point and cable path. Revisit the plan with the desk in both seated and standing positions if it moves. Keep the light controls reachable. These are editorial planning steps, not a lighting test, and the finished illumination depends on the selected lamp, bulb, placement, and room.

Diagnose the source of the glare

With your normal screen content open, change one light at a time. Turn off the desk lamp, close or adjust the window covering, then turn the lamp back on in another position. This simple comparison distinguishes a reflected bright source from a screen that merely needs its brightness adjusted. Avoid arranging a lamp where it illuminates the screen rather than the papers or keyboard you want to see. Keep a note of the position that worked so you can recreate it after rearranging the desk.

Screen lamps and work lamps solve different placement problems

A screen-mounted light avoids using a base on the desk, but its mounting method must fit the monitor. BenQ's ScreenBar families have different lighting and attachment features; check the exact model rather than assuming the name describes one universal clamp. IKEA TERTIAL uses a desk clamp and accepts a separately purchased E26 bulb, within the model's stated maximum bulb power. Those installation and bulb requirements belong on the shopping list alongside the lamp.

Keep the working area adjustable

Try the lamp with both the screen and any paper task. A position that works for a video call may not suit reading a printed page. Follow the lamp's own electrical and mounting instructions, leave its vents unobstructed, and keep cords away from moving desk components. This guidance helps organize a lighting decision; it does not claim an independent brightness measurement, flicker test or medical benefit for any lamp.
