Check the mount before the makeover.
Screen size is only one part of choosing a monitor arm.

Find your monitor's exact model and read its mounting specification. The VESA interface describes the mounting holes and attachment hardware. Ergotron's guide identifies the hole pattern and monitor weight as primary compatibility checks; a screen diagonal alone cannot establish a match.
Compare the monitor's weight without its original stand to the arm's supported load range. Check the mounting pattern, required adapter, and screw guidance. Then consult both the desk and arm instructions for clamp or grommet support, surface thickness, and any reinforcement requirements. Treat unsupported configurations as unresolved rather than assuming a mount will work.
Once the hardware is compatible, consider the position it can reach. OSHA recommends a screen directly ahead, at least 20 inches away, with the top line at or below eye level. Check wall clearance and how far the arm extends when the screen is in your preferred position.
For two screens, OSHA recommends placing the primary screen in front of you. If you use them equally, position them together within a comfortable viewing angle. Recheck cable travel after moving the screens.
Build a four-part compatibility record
Write down the complete monitor model, its weight without the stand, its mounting-hole pattern and the intended desk thickness. Check whether removing the stand reveals a recessed mounting area that requires the supplied hardware or a manufacturer-approved adapter. Monitor size is a starting filter; screen weight and the arm's permitted range still matter. A light screen can also fall below a spring arm's minimum supported weight. Keep missing information visible rather than selecting a mount from the diagonal alone.
Check the furniture, too
Inspect the area beneath the rear edge of the desk. An apron, cable tray or bevel can prevent a clamp from seating even when the top's nominal thickness looks suitable. Glass, hollow-core and unusually shaped surfaces need the furniture and mount instructions checked together. A grommet mount requires an appropriate opening and access beneath it. Measure the complete clamp location, not only the visible surface thickness at the front edge.
Plan the movement before tightening anything
Sketch where the screen will move, including the wall behind it and neighboring screens. Leave a cable loop for adjustment without allowing connectors to take the pull. Follow the exact arm's supplied installation and tension-setting instructions; unrelated model limits cannot establish compatibility. Keep original stands and hardware until the installation is confirmed. This catalog records Ergotron LX, HX and TRACE as distinct families, so a shared brand is never a substitute for checking the selected arm and accessory revision.
