Before a monitor-arm clamp: inspect the desk edge and underside

Check edge construction, mounting access and component clearance before choosing an exact monitor-arm clamp or grommet package.

Thickness is only the first measurement

A monitor arm can list a supported desk thickness without establishing that your desk edge is suitable. Ergotron's LX attachment-selection drawings show different mounting arrangements with different access and clearance requirements. The standard clamp, an alternative clamp and a grommet package should be treated as separate configurations. Begin with the exact arm and mount part number, then obtain the matching installation drawing.

Inspect the actual mounting area

Look at the edge from above and below. Record the tabletop thickness at the proposed location, the underside shape, any apron or metal frame and the available area for the clamp pad. A decorative lip or sloping edge can change the contact surface. Do not assume that an exterior thickness describes the tabletop's internal construction. For a hollow or composite surface, confirm suitability with the desk and arm manufacturers before applying a concentrated mounting load.

Measure access as well as fit

Mark where the clamp body, screw and adjustment tool must go. Include a cable tray, motor housing, wall, privacy panel or shelf that can prevent installation or tightening. A clamp that nominally fits the tabletop can still be inaccessible after the desk is placed against the wall. If the manufacturer permits a different installation sequence, record it in the plan rather than discovering the obstruction while holding a monitor.

Compare mounting packages honestly

A grommet arrangement may require a suitable existing opening or a new hole. Confirm the specified hole and fastener requirements and whether the mounting hardware is actually included in the offer. Do not drill without the desk owner's authority or use a cable opening as a load-bearing mount merely because a bolt fits through it. A reinforcement plate, where the manufacturer permits one, does not automatically certify every weak surface.

Draw the arm at its working positions

Once the desk attachment is plausible, draw the screen in the nearest and farthest intended positions. Check rear wall space and any projection beyond the desk edge. Keep monitor load, VESA compatibility and desk attachment as separate fields in your checklist. Meeting the arm's weight range does not answer the tabletop question. Follow the assembly instructions for supported loads, fasteners and adjustment; do not substitute a general shopping guide for installation requirements.

Save an installation question with the shortlist

If a measurement or construction detail remains unknown, attach a clear question to the exact arm candidate. Use the monitor-arm category for evidenced options and the load checklist for the screen itself. A photograph of an installed arm on another desk proves neither your edge construction nor your mounting package. Finish the mounting plan before paying for an arm that may require a different clamp or a different desk location.
