Desk clearance planner: furniture plus moving space

Calculate a planning rectangle and test it against the chair, storage and room access.

Room planning envelope

Planning envelope: 170 × 155 cm. Approximate floor area: 2.63 m².

Allowances are your inputs, not prescribed safety or accessibility clearances. Test the actual room.

What belongs in a footprint

The width and depth of a desktop describe the furniture's top, not the complete space used during a workday. A chair moves, drawers open and cables need access. Our calculator adds user-supplied side and rear allowances to a user-supplied desk rectangle. The result is a planning envelope, not a building-code clearance or an accessibility certification. Choose allowances by testing the actual room and its users.

Measure in one unit

Record the top's width and depth in centimeters, then measure the narrowest clear space where it will sit. Note baseboards, radiators and doors that open into the room. Tape a rectangle on the floor, move your present chair into it and back out again. Add the space used by a storage drawer in its open position. The calculator helps keep these values together, but physical measurements take precedence over the estimate.

A comparison using catalog dimensions

Vari Electric Standing Desk 60x30 identifies a 60-by-30-inch surface. The Grovemade Desk record identifies a 58-by-28-inch surface. Branch Duo offers several sizes, so choose the specific top before drawing its rectangle. A smaller top can reduce the furniture footprint while leaving less surface for a keyboard, mouse and papers. Do not count an overhanging accessory or screen arm as though it occupies no room simply because its base is small.

Include the movement path

For an adjustable-height desk, inspect what is above and below the top throughout the intended travel. A shelf, cabinet handle, windowsill or cable may enter that path. Position power and signal cables so connectors do not take the pull when the desk moves. Follow the exact desk's installation instructions and distinguish the frame's stated height from the finished height with a top. An obstacle-detection feature does not establish that every surrounding arrangement is safe.

Save a decision you can review

Keep the room sketch with the selected model, size, finish and intended accessories. If a merchant changes the configuration, check the new measurements before ordering. Use your planning envelope to compare alternatives, then confirm the actual furniture and installation requirements. This tutorial provides a method for measurement and comparison; it does not claim that Office Home Supply has assembled or tested these desks in your room.
