When a standing desk stops: make a model-specific fault record

Identify the exact control system, separate observation from diagnosis and use the matching manufacturer's instructions before attempting a reset.

Capture the symptom before changing anything

A standing desk that stops moving creates several questions at once: which system is installed, what happened immediately before the stop and which instructions apply. Start with an observation record. Write the date, direction of the last movement, displayed text or code, approximate desk position and whether the desk recently moved to another room. A photograph of the display can preserve an intermittent code. Describe what you saw without naming a failed motor or control box that has not been diagnosed.

Identify the installed desk and controller

Find the product label and the documents supplied with the desk. Record the complete model, size, controller identification where available and purchase period. A seller's order title may identify a family while the installed equipment needs a more specific manual. Compare the instructions with the actual controls. If the previous owner replaced a controller or used another base, include that uncertainty in the support request. Do not assume that two desks with similar button layouts share a reset procedure.

The published Vari tables illustrate why this matters. Their current desk, older desk and Essential desk sections do not give every code the same meaning. E01 appears under table-leg failure for one group and under current protection associated with loading for Essential. In the older table, E02 describes motor overuse. Read the heading above the relevant table as carefully as the code itself. These are examples from Vari's documentation, not a universal decoder for other manufacturers.

Make a small fault worksheet

Use columns for the observation, matching manual section, permitted action, result and unresolved question. Add the load inventory and a note about anything that recently changed, such as an attached arm or relocated cable tray. Record equipment weight only when known. An unknown weight remains a question rather than becoming zero. Keep a room sketch with objects beneath or beside the moving top; the desk's travel may differ from the small adjustment you normally make.

Apply only the matching documented procedure

Before an instructed reset, read the complete procedure and its movement requirements. Follow the manufacturer's precautions for the exact system. Prepare the specified movement area and keep people and pets clear. If the procedure requires access that you cannot safely provide, stop and request manufacturer support. Do not improvise wiring changes, open a control enclosure or borrow a button sequence from a different desk. A reset is a documented action for specified conditions, not a way to prove that an unresolved mechanical fault is harmless.

After any permitted action, write down whether the code disappeared, which movement was restored and whether the same symptom returned. Check the full procedure's completion conditions rather than stopping when the top first moves. Avoid repeated trial cycles when the instructions require waiting or contacting support. For the listed persistent faults, Vari directs the reader to its support team. Keep that escalation point in the worksheet.

Use the record for repair and future selection

A useful support packet contains the model identification, exact symptom, relevant instruction section, completed permitted actions and remaining uncertainties. Share private order details only with the appropriate support channel. Save the resolution with the desk's assembly documents. When evaluating a replacement, ask whether its instructions, service contacts and parts identification are clear. Better documentation can make the next interruption easier to investigate; it does not establish measured reliability or guarantee a repair.
