Count the complete moving load before choosing a standing desk
Build a load inventory that includes mounts, power equipment and future changes, then ask what the selected desk rating actually covers.

Make the rating answer a specific question
A desk's capacity is useful only when you know what the manufacturer includes in it. Before comparing numbers, write the exact desk model, tabletop size and finish, and whether the listing describes a complete desk or a frame. Read the relevant instructions for the selected configuration. Ask the manufacturer whether its stated allowance is for equipment added above the supplied top or whether a replacement top must be included. Leave that question unresolved when the documentation is unclear.
List what actually rises
Create a row for each moving item: display, monitor mount, computer, speakers, dock, lamp, power strip, cable tray and everyday supplies. Include accessories attached beneath the top when they move with the desk. Use supported manufacturer weights or your own measurement; label the origin of each value. For a display supported by an arm, avoid counting the removed factory stand as part of its operating weight. Include the arm itself as a separate load.
Keep the arithmetic inspectable
Use one unit throughout the worksheet and keep original units in a separate column. For example, hypothetical loads of 18, 12, 9 and 4 pounds total 43 pounds. These invented worksheet numbers are arithmetic examples, not measurements of particular products. Add an explicit row for equipment whose weight is unknown. An empty cell must not quietly count as zero. Save the total with the date and the planned arrangement so that it can be checked after a new monitor or computer arrives.
Separate weight from placement
A satisfactory total does not establish stability, suitable clamp support or safe lifting behavior. Sketch the attachment locations and look at the manufacturer's permitted setup. Check the top's material, unsupported edges and attachment instructions separately. Vari advises checking the underlying desk's limit when adding a converter and personal equipment. That is a second structure with its own requirements; the converter's allowance cannot replace that check.
Check the movement area
Follow cables and fixed objects through the full travel described in the instructions. OSHA emphasizes keeping the space beneath the desk clear for legs and posture changes. An under-desk computer or drawer unit may obstruct that space even when the lifting load is acceptable. Document those fit checks in Workspace Builder alongside your load inventory.
Use the worksheet to compare complete options
For each shortlisted desk, record the load-rating definition, known equipment total, unresolved weights and attachment questions. Do not invent a universal safety margin or treat capacity as a measured stability score. Favor the configuration whose instructions answer your actual installation questions, and confirm any unanswered structural or load question with the manufacturer before ordering.
