Cable management for a desk that changes height

Plan fixed points, moving loops and accessible connections before attaching a cable tray.

Draw the cables before fastening them

Make a list of every device on the moving top and every cable that leaves it. Include power, video, USB and network connections. Then draw where each cable starts and ends: on the top, under the top, on the floor or at a wall outlet. A cable between two devices that move together behaves differently from one connected to a fixed point. This distinction is more useful than buying a tray before knowing what it must hold.

Give moving connections a controlled loop

Check the desk's own instructions for the complete installation and cable route. At the intended highest and lowest positions, inspect whether any cable becomes taut, catches an edge or enters a moving component. Leave enough travel without creating a hanging loop that the chair can snag. Do not use a connector or adapter as a strain-relief point. If a cable is too short, choose a compatible length and type for the entire connection rather than stretching it into place.

Keep the power route separate from assumptions

A dock such as CalDigit TS4 can consolidate several connections, but it still has its own power supply and host connection requirements. Its manufacturer-listed port count does not remove the need to identify the cables. Record which adapter belongs to which device. Follow all device and power-accessory instructions, and avoid placing enclosed bundles where the equipment requires ventilation. This planning article does not recommend an electrical modification or claim a tested electrical capacity for an accessory.

Position accessories around furniture constraints

Before choosing an under-desk tray, inspect the desktop material, available fastening method and any frame members beneath it. Keep access to controls and future screen clamps. A tray placed exactly where an arm clamp needs to seat can create a new installation problem. Use the manufacturer's permitted attachment method; do not assume adhesive or screws are interchangeable on every top.

Test the finished route gradually

With the installation complete according to the supplied instructions, inspect the route while changing desk height as directed. Stop if a cable pulls or catches. Label important connectors and photograph your own arrangement for maintenance. Recheck the route after adding a monitor, dock or storage unit. The useful result is a connection map that stays understandable when equipment changes, not a completely hidden bundle that cannot be inspected.
