Before an SSD upgrade: prepare an encrypted-drive handoff

Prepare a recoverable migration plan, locate the correct encryption recovery record and separate hardware compatibility from data recovery.

Start with the job the upgrade must preserve

Write a short handoff before ordering an internal drive. Identify the computer, its owner, the applications needed on the next workday and where the current files live. Note whether the machine belongs to an employer or school. A managed computer may require an approved service process even when its hardware accepts the proposed drive. Record who can authorize the work and who will perform it. Buying the right capacity is only one part of a successful migration.

Separate three kinds of evidence

Create columns for physical compatibility, data recovery and application readiness. Physical compatibility belongs to the exact computer service documentation. Samsung identifies the 980 PRO 1TB as an internal M.2 PCIe NVMe drive; it is not interchangeable with a USB portable drive or a SATA-only slot. Write the proposed model and part beside the supported socket and cooling arrangement. Leave an uncertain answer open rather than treating the appearance of a connector as approval.

The data column names the backup location, its date and the person who checked that important files can be opened from it. The application column lists installation access, sign-in requirements and any organization-specific licensing process. Keep these columns separate. A completed backup does not establish hardware compatibility, and a compatible drive does not prove that an application can be restored.

Locate encryption recovery before service

Microsoft explains that a hardware change can cause Windows to request a BitLocker recovery key. Its instructions distinguish the recovery key ID from the recovery key itself and describe possible storage in a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account, a printout or a USB file. Follow the current Microsoft instructions for the device's actual setup. For a managed machine, use the organization's authorized support channel. Do not assume that the account you normally use contains every device's recovery record.

The handoff should say that access was checked, when it was checked and which authorized person holds the record. Keep the secret key out of a shared purchase spreadsheet, public screenshot or product comparison. Record only the minimum identification needed to associate the right recovery record with the right computer. A password or ordinary account sign-in is not a substitute for the relevant drive-recovery evidence.

Choose the acceptance check before opening the case

Agree on a short checklist: the computer starts through its normal approved process, the intended storage appears, necessary files open and essential work applications can be used. Include the expected retention of the old drive until the transfer and backup have been checked. Follow the computer and drive manufacturers' service instructions; this worksheet does not provide a cloning command or authorize bypassing encryption.

Close the handoff with unresolved items

List uncertainties about the exact build, backup, recovery access or installation support. If one is essential, resolve it before service rather than discovering it after the old drive is unavailable. Keep a dated completion note and any permitted service documentation. Office Home Supply has not performed the migration or tested the proposed drive. The worksheet helps make responsibilities and evidence visible; it does not guarantee recovery or establish a retailer's current stock.
